Located right next to the "Wu Chengen Memorial Residence" was "The Monkey King Noble Family Art Building"【美猴王世家藝術館】. It was built in 2004 in Huai'an to:
(1) Spread the culture of "Journey to the West" and preserve the spirit of Monkey King;
(2) Commemorate 500-year birthday of Wu Chengen, the famous author of the popular novel "Journey to the West"; and
(3) Honor the artistic contributions made by the Zhang Family's four generations(章氏四代猴王家族) of Monkey King performance.

By the time we completed our tour, it was nearly 4 PM. Ms. Zhao took us directly to a hair salon. I decided to cut my hair short and try a complete new style for a change.

However, in the middle of this process, the salon lost its electricity and I was stuck with a half-done hair perm. Since time was running short, I was rushed to a nearby branch of the salon and had to walk out with the towel still wrapped on my head.....what an awkward situation!

The cost of my perm and cut? RMB 860(over US$100)! I managed to bargain for a discount and paid RMB 600 at the end. This certainly was an unforgetable hair experience for me!
By 6:20 PM, we rushed back to our hotel - Huai'an State Guesthouse.

Our group was invited by Huai'an Foreign Affairs Office to be the VIP guests for the Opening Ceremony of the 2007 Huai'an Chinese HuaiYang Gourmet Culture Festival(2007 淮安‧中國淮揚菜美食文化節開幕式). It is an annual big event in Huai'an and the expected audience was around 8,000 to 10,000. The ticket price for the Honored Guest Seat was 2,800 RMB(approx. US$375)!

After changing into appropriate attire for the Opening Ceremony, we boarded the VIP Shuttle Bus from the hotel and went to the Huai'an Sports Stadium as Honored Guests for this big event.

I've watched the big shows in China on TV many times at home, however, to be seated in the crowded stadium and surrounded by thousands of people with the sights and sounds of such a big event was quite a new and exciting experience. The event lasted for two and half hours with non-stop light show, laser show, fire works show, dancers, singers, acrobatics, etc. I enjoyed all of the programs and had a good time there.
Below are some photos to demonstrate some of the highlights of the evening:
